Another record breaking month for Le Shuttle Freight

Eurotunnel’s truck carrying service, Le Shuttle Freight, recorded its thirteenth consecutive month of growth in November, according to the latest data released by the company.

Truck traffic rose by 6.8% on the service compared to November 2015, with 143,114 trucks transported - its second best month ever (after March 2016).

For the period January-November 2016, there has been an 11.6% increase in truck traffic on Le Shuttle Freight, compared with the same period in 2015. Between 01 January and Friday 25 November 2016, 1,483,741 trucks were transported, the same number as in the whole of 2015.

Jo Willacy, Eurotunnel Commercial Director, said: "Our business creates extraordinary value for our customers who are themselves confident in their outlook for 2017. The investment programme we have pursued, will ensure that we are able to continue this growth through the coming years.”

The news follows the release of a report from Ernst and Young which found the Channel Tunnel facilitates trade worth £91.4bn per year, representing a quarter of all UK trade in goods with the European Union.

The report, Economic footprint of the Channel Tunnel fixed link, assesses the economic contribution of the Channel Tunnel to trade and tourism, and its role in the UK’s economic growth. It found that 30% of UK exports (£43.6bn) to the EU and 22% of imports (£47.8bn) from the EU depend on the speed ease and reliability of the Channel Tunnel, with exports through the Tunnel alone supporting 220,000 jobs in the UK.
