Liebherr opens £26 million R&D centre

Material handling equipment manufacturer Liebherr has opened a new £26 million R&D centre in Germany.

The centre, at the company’s Kirchdorf factory in Germany, will be used to develop and test new construction and material handling machines, including those destined for the UK market.

The 12.7 hectares site comprises a testing hall, demonstration area and 1.2km test track where operational environments can be simulated.

Commenting on the new facility, Liebherr GB’s Managing Director, Lee Palmer, said: “This investment demonstrates Liebherr’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of the UK and global material handler and construction machine markets.

“It’s great news for our customers who will benefit from the innovation that this centre will enable us to bring to life and the continued improvements in the reliability, efficiency and operational performance of our machines,” he added.

Back in April Liebherr GB Ltd announced the acquisition of a new 15-acre site adjoining the company’s existing 9-acre headquarters in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.

Liebherr was established in 1949. The Group now includes over 130 companies, employing more than 42,000 employees.
